As for @torproject / #TorBrowser, I wished they'd offer their own repos then (like for #Android / @fdroidorg ) so one can orchestrate and deploy it across a fleet of systems (i.e. #InternetCafe) with existing tools (i.e. #Canonical #Landscape for @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS)…

@adisonverlice and I'm pretty shure @calyxinstitute won't take it kindly to folks constantly roaming globally.

But yeah, getting #Tor / @torproject working and some sort of internet is more flexible...

  • Worst-case one does "reverse-#Tethering" at an #Internetcafé and uses uucp and/or foldering via "meat proxies" to communicate.

@torproject @ZDNet TBH, I'd always recommend people to use @tails / @tails_live / #Tails if they want a secure and private OS.

  • Shure in theory one could do more #secure with #OpenBSD, but that's neither easy to use for non-#IT-folks nor easy to onboard people into.

Tails by contrast just comes with #TorBrowser, @thunderbird and other nifty tools preconfigured from the get go and allows people to get started, regardless if it's a #journalist or someones' grandma who may not have her own dedicaded machine but instead uses an external SSD/HDD to just boot into her desktop and not rely on the #malware-laced #Internetcafé's #Windows installation...

Not to mention it avoids a lot of #pitfalls that other distros like @kalilinux will deliberaltely keep open because their goals are diametral to that.

The Essentials

When I took this photo back in 2016, it was a combination coffee/Chinese food restaurant: they sold coffee in the mornings and Chinese food for lunch and dinner. The owner had previously run a separate coffee shop (The Bean Counter, IIRC) in the same shopping center, then combined the two businesses to save on rent. It was one of our go-to Chinese takeout sources, and I’d sometimes grab coffee in the mornings if I was in the area or on my way somewhere in that direction.

The old coffee location sat vacant for a few years until a bakery (with coffee on the side) moved in. Amusingly, the bakery — which is still there today — also chose a pun-based name: Redondough (as in Redondo Beach).

In early 2020 — and I mean early, either January or February — they were offered a really nice buyout price by someone who wanted to turn-key convert it overnight to a Hawaiian restaurant. I imagine when mid-March rolled around and the initial Covid lockdown started, they were extremely relieved to have accepted it!

I never did get around to trying the Hawaiian place, even for takeout. Eventually it was taken over by a Korean fast food chain.
