Governing Through Liability: Cox v. Sony and the Fragmentation of the Internet

Cox v. Sony narrows intermediary liability, insisting on intent over knowledge. In doing so, it preserves infrastructure neutrality, resists privatized enforcement, and sharpens a growing divide between American and European models of Internet governance.

This is a huge win for the #Internet and #InternetAccess in general! The movie / TV industry wants to make Internet Service Providers (ISPs) responsible for policing all their subscribers and making sure they aren't downloading pirated content - and responsible for blocking those subscribers.

But... *that's not how the Internet works!*

There could be 10s, 100s, or 1000s of people behind a single IP address - all who would be blocked - but not now.
