In the past, it was up to the doctor to snip or sew up the bits they thought were "better" for the child.
Parents were not even part of the equation. It was to spare them the trauma of having a "freak".
And likely, the medical knowledge of the time recognised that some proportion of parents would reject the child. No one wanted a "hermaphrodite" child (as they were then called).
These "adjustment" procedures may well be still carried out in US hospitals. The topic is controversial on its own.
The number of #intergender people is estimated to be about 250,000,000 worldwide.

Das „I“ in LSBTQI ist oft wenig sichtbar und kaum repräsentiert. Was beschäftigt die Inter*-Community? Gibt es Überschneidungen mit trans* und enby? Anlässlich des Intersex Awareness Day am 26.10. bietet Sarah, selbst inter* und aktiv im Aufklärungsbereich, einen kompakten Einblick in diese Themen.
Intersex Pride Flags
Inter-transgender: when an intersex person is transgender in any sort of way, and this transness is connected or linked to being intersex.
This includes intersex people who feel trans because of a forced medical transition (mistransition/distransition). This includes ipsotrans/exparium people: intersex people whose gender is the same as their AGAB but are trans nevertheless.
This flag design follows the pattern of the interfluid, interdemigender, etc flags. It takes the transgender flag and adds intersex yellow stripes to top and bottom to signify it is an intersex/intergender version of transgender.

Demi-intergender: a term for intersex people who feel that their gender is partly connected to or influenced by being intersex, but not so much that they would call themself intergender. They're thus in between intergender and extergender (gender not influenced by being intersex).
I've created this flag that follows the pattern of demiandrogyne, demimaverique, demipangender, etc which is to take the demigender flag and replace the middle three stripes with the intergender flag.
Note this is not the same as *inter-demigender* which is when you are demigender in a way that feels connected to being intersex.

Intersexgender: a pride flag for intersex people who feel their gender is intersex, full stop. This is a specific subset of intergender (when your gender is influenced by being intersex).
Indeed, we intersex people want it very clear that intersex is not the same as gender, and that intersex people can have any gender! There are a minority who feel they have no gender other than intersex, and this flag is for them.
I made this flag by combining the intergender flag with the yellow stripes at top & bottom that I have been using to create intergender flags (e.g. interfluid, interdemigirl), to indicate that this extra intergendery.

I've made this flag by taking the intergender flag and de-colouring it. Black and white represent how one's gender is clearly separate from being intersex. White represents all possible genders, black represents the absence of the influence of being intersex. The ring indicates this is still an intersex-specific label.

Interdemigender: demigender in a way that is connected to being intersex. Demigender is an umbrella category for genders that feel partially connected to a given gender - e.g. demigirl is someone who feels partially female. An interdemigirl is someone who feels partly female in a way that is tied to being intersex.
Attached are flags I've made for interdemigender (yellow), interdemigirl (pink), interdemiboy (blue). Each one takes the original demigender flag and adds intersex yellow stripes to top and bottom to convey the intersex-ness.
