A promise can circulate beautifully before anyone asks what design would make it real.

That gap between moral language and material consequence is where public trust begins to thin.

This piece is about coherence as leadership: keeping words, responsibility, and reality in the same frame.

The piece discusses how psychological differences between liberals and conservatives shifted after the 2024 U.S. presidential election, with Democrats showing declines in well-being and trust while Republicans tended to improve in these areas. The study tracked 20 weeks of participants across seven measurement points to observe changes in well-being, self-views, and worldviews in relation to who they voted for.

The article is of interest to psychology readers because it highlights how political events can modulate psychological states and attitudes, challenging the notion of fixed ideological differences and illustrating the dynamic interplay between political power and individual psychology.

Participation, dignity, care, transparency, inclusion, voice — the language is everywhere. But what happens when the words remain, while the structures meant to carry them grow thinner, vaguer, or harder to answer for?

Institutions often concentrate authority while diffusing responsibility. The result is predictable: erosion of trust. This essay outlines a moral architecture — aligning decision and consequence through ethical limits and structural design — to make accountability systemic, not performative.

WP9 Archives - respond

WP9 focuses on understanding how corrupt practices influence citizens’ and elites’ views on democracy and political corruption. The research aims to provide empirical evidence on how corruptible practices affect democratic resilience or backsliding in various democratic systems. It examines perceptions of political corruption among citizens and political elites, exploring their understanding of reputational risks associated with unethical conduct. This WP also investigates citizens’ and elites’ preferences for mitigation measures and the impact these have on trust in political institutions. Through focus groups and lab experiments across nine countries, researchers will analyze citizens’ perceptions of political corruption, which will inform subsequent surveys on how different forms of corruption influence support for democracy. Additionally, political ethics self-regulation mechanisms will be evaluated through conjoint experiments with voters and MPs. Finally, a co-creation workshop with stakeholders will explore a common advocacy agenda for promoting political ethics self-regulation at a European level.
