Many years ago when I launched my first game as an indie dev (Age of Curling - https://markus.hofer.rocks/age-of-curling) I built in a little news blurb that called a php script to get the news and sent a unique device id along, so I got to see how many unique devices were running my game. On launch day I was ecstatic - so many people were playing it! The following day - when iTunes released the numbers - I was sad. Guess what - most of them were pirates.
