Bonus picture of the gentle giant of the garden, a female pellucid hover fly (Volucella pellucens; 🇩🇪 Gemeine Waldschwebfliege).

Well, I say that, but a moment after I took this picture, something dived bombed the hover fly, & they both went haring off across the garden buzzing madly 😬✌️

Another cool find this evening.

Around here, green flower beetles with red patches on their wing cases tend to be the common malachite beetle (Malachius bipustulatus).

But the similar & much rarer Clanoptilus geniculatus can be ID'd via the "elytra excitator" spikes between those patches, as seen here.

This small moth was flitting around in the undergrowth this evening.

It's likely genus Aproaerema, & one of A. larseniella (white-strap sober) or A. cinctella (white-streak sober).

Both are found in Europe, but the former has just five observations in Germany on iNaturalist & the latter, err, none.

Crazy.

First, this rather lovely cream-coloured ladybird (Calvia quatuordecimguttata; 🇩🇪 Vierzehntropfiger Marienkäfer).

In Europe, it always comes in this orange & white colour scheme: in North America & Asia, it can vary considerably.

Chilly & endlessly rainy for much of today.

A break this evening just before it got dark: long enough to spot this green lacewing at @mpi_astro on the Königstuhl.

From the concave forewing & colouring, I think it's Nineta flava (🇩🇪 Gelbliche Florfliege), rather than the more common Chrysoperla carnea.
