I fucking hated #InfiniteScroll as soon as I saw it. Nice to see Meta and Google compared to tobacco firms. I'm pretty sure its even some of the same people.

‘The era of invincibility is over’: the week big tech was brought to heel

Ruling that Meta and YouTube deliberately designed addictive products marks possible watershed moment for big tech

It's how the Internet works -- it's not instantaneous, constantly

If you're offline for five hours and you start up your "app" which "page" does your app pull down from across the entire Fediverse first?

The oldest pages you're missing?

Or the very newest pages you're missing?

150 of the oldest pages, or 25 of the newest pages?

And then "show" them to you, starting where?

FUTILE · The useless infinite scroll website

A weird and useless website to waste time. An absurd experiment in endless scrolling where the void slowly wins. How far will you go?

"I don’t know which trial or regulatory action will be the one that finally forces major changes to social platforms for teenagers. But it seems increasingly clear that change is in fact coming." #bluelz #socialmedia #darkpatterns #infinitescroll #trials www.platformer.news/social-media...

Why the infinite-scroll childhood may be coming to an end

A lawsuit that begins in LA this week, along with a new investigation into TikTok by the European Commission, could change social apps forever. PLUS: AI ads at the Super Bowl and in ChatGPT

"In 2019, Aza Raskin, who claims to have invented the infinite scrolling technique, expressed regret at the invention, saying that he 'did not foresee the consequences' and describing it as 'one of the first products designed to not simply help a user, but to deliberately keep them online for as long as possible'."

Fun stuff when live testing the new /world feed

Last month I teased a new interface for the /world page, a feed-style interface that attempts to straddle the line between microblog content and threaded content.

That interface is actually live on both community.nodebb.org and ActivityPub.space, so it's possible to try them out today.

Since it's a feed, it does take longer to scroll through than a traditional topic listing.

Coming soon, a new /world experience

Coming soon to a NodeBB near you... a new way to browse both microblog and threadiverse content all in one feed.

Most social media platforms design feeds to be endless.

We made reaching the end the goal.

You see posts from friends in chronological order.

When you're caught up, you see: "All caught up! 🎉"

Then the feed ends.

You can close the app and go live your life.

The Finite Feed: What Happens When You're 'All Caught Up'

Most social media platforms design their feeds to be endless. We made reaching the end the goal. Here's why a finite feed changes everything.

TechSpot: Europe is coming after infinite scroll – TikTok’s endless feed is now a legal problem. “The European Commission has formally accused TikTok of designing its product to be addictive – particularly for minors – and indicated that features such as infinite scroll may need to change. This marks the first time EU regulators have treated addictive design as a systemic risk under the […]
