Not All Causal Inference is the Same

Neurally-parameterized Structural Causal Models in the Pearlian notion to causality, referred to as NCM, were recently introduced as a step towards next-generation learning systems. However, said...

Off-Policy Evaluation with Out-of-Sample Guarantees

We consider the problem of evaluating the performance of a decision policy using past observational data. The outcome of a policy is measured in terms of a loss (aka. disutility or negative reward)...

New work by Melissa Johnston et al. (2023) shows, that #crows demonstrate the ability to make #statistical #inferences and maximize rewards based on memorized probabilities. These birds represent probabilities as abstract magnitudes and utilize relative reward frequencies, showcasing #decisionmaking skills beyond the primate lineage.

Dear Friends,

@heatmap_news is really promising but I can't agree to their #privacy policy. I get where they are coming from, but not ready to follow them there. #Tracking and #targeting #ads (and #retargeting) based on #behavioral #inferences are at the root of the destructiveness of the #recursive #web.

I believe that is just a #record of an interaction between two (or more) physical #structures.

Memory requires an entire physical #system able to preserve the #information contained in this record from one moment in time to another until it is retrieved (by the system) and used for something else.

According to #HvFoerster, the “integrated functional circuit” for #Cognition requires three things:

1⃣ #Perception
2⃣ #Memory, and
3⃣ #Prediction

Prediction is essential for drawing (memory-based) #inferences

” without which perception degenerates into #sensation and memory into #recording”.

According to #HvFoerster, the integrated functional circuit for #cognition requires these three faculties:

1️⃣ #Perception - without which the system cannot detect and internally represent environmental regularities,
2️⃣ #Memory - without which the system has only throughput (cannot learn)
3️⃣ #Prediction - or the faculty of drawing #inferences, without which perception degenerates into #sensation and memory into #recording.
