Incunabula — A book what was printed afore the year 1500, in the days prior to the dawn of publishin', when the press wasn't even a wee' babe in the womb!
I deciphered some heavily abbreviated scholastic Latin pasted into a book binding and found Johannes Nider’s Praeceptorium divinae legis hiding in the flyleaves of a Thalbach devotional book.
Fragments really do have a place in intellectual history.

A blog post today on the Seelengärtlein (Hortulus animae), one of the hugely popular prayerbooks of the 16th century. Both a bit about how to find copies and a bit about indexing the thing. I love me a good spreadsheet! Oh, and there are woodcuts. But the Hellmouth is from a different print...

_“Today’s blogpost explores the stories of three Jewish women living and working in Europe in the 15th century – Estellina Conat, Teresa de Lucena and Doña Reyna Mendes – highlighting books from the British Library’s Hebrew incunabula (15th-century printed books) and 16th-century printed collections.”_
