A really engaging, playful show by Off Brand with Semay Wu at the Fruitmarket Gallery last night. This was part of Ali Robertson & Firas Khnaisser’s TFEH series of experimental music gigs.

Tom Mudd and Rage Thormbones (Mattie Barbier & Weston Olencki) were also fantastic but I wasn’t able to get any pictures of them!

Holger Czukay: "What we did with Can was often perceived as improvising, but that's a misunderstanding - what we were doing was instant composition! The fact that no one understood it just brought us even closer together. That's probably why we stayed together for so long, because it was soon clear to all of us that we were on a path no one had walked before us, one we could only walk together. Strangely enough, it was the Americans who understood it best, perhaps because there were parallels to us in their New Music. Steve Reich's "Drumming" is composed with notes, but it comes entirely out of playing as an ensemble, from listening to each other and intertwining to get an organic, dynamic ball rolling, like with Can."
