In any other country the people would be on the streets if their leaders illegally invaded another country. Heck, there were even protests in Russia in 2021 when they invaded Ukraine, though they were quickly suppressed by Putin.

Will Americans have a similar reaction or will they collectively raise their shoulders in indifference as their leaders start yet another illegal military excursion?

A quotation from Racine

HIPPOLYTUS: Great crimes are never single, they are link’d
   To former faults. He who has once transgress’d
   May violate at last all that men hold
   Most sacred; vice, like virtue, has degrees
   Of progress; innocence was never seen
   To sink at once into the lowest depths
   Of guilt.

[HIPPOLYTE: Quelques crimes toujours precedent les grands crimes.
   Quiconque a pu franchir les bornes légitimes
   Peut violer enfin les droits les plus sacrés ;
   Ainsi que la vertu, le crime a ses degrés ;
   Et jamais on n’a vu la timide innocence
   Passer subitement à l’extrême licence.]

A quotation from Hannah Arendt

What makes it so plausible to assume that hypocrisy is the vice of vices is that integrity can indeed exist under the cover of all other vices except this one. Only crime and the criminal, it is true, confront us with the perplexity of radical evil; but only the hypocrite is really rotten to the core.

On Revolution, ch. 2, sec. 5 (1963)

A quotation from Franklin Roosevelt

We may make mistakes — but they must never be mistakes which result from faintness of heart or abandonment of moral principle.

The UK and Denmark are so poor, so immoral, so without humanity, so uncivilised that they will steal the last belongings of refugees. What sad, pathetic countries. How embarrassed must their people be?

A quotation from Hannah Arendt

The trouble with Eichmann was precisely that so many were like him, and that the many were neither perverted nor sadistic, that they were, and still are, terribly and terrifyingly normal. From the viewpoint of our legal institutions and of our moral standards of judgment, this normality was much more terrifying than all the atrocities put together, for it implied — as had been said at Nuremberg over and over again by the defendants and their counsels — that this new type of criminal, who is in actual fact hostis generis humani [enemy of humanity], commits his crimes under circumstances that make it well-nigh impossible for him to know or to feel that he is doing wrong.

An #internet #blackout hit #Afghanistan Monday, with local media reporting a potential nationwide cut of fiber-optic services as part of a #Taliban *#morality* crackdown.

It’s the first time Afghanistan has experienced a shutdown of this kind since the Taliban seized power in Aug 2021.

Internet blackout hits Afghanistan

An internet advocacy group says connectivity in Afghanistan has “collapsed” with a near-total nationwide telecoms disruption in effect. Earlier this month, several provinces lost fiber-optic connections after Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada issued a decree banning the service to prevent immorality. On Monday, Netblocks said the collapse of the internet was likely to severely limit the public’s ability to contact the outside world. There was no immediate confirmation of the blackout from the Taliban government, which relies heavily on messaging apps and social media for its external and internal communications.
