US ordered to release 5-year-old and dad taken into custody in Minnesota

A judge has ordered the U.S. to release a father and 5-year-old son who were taken into custody during the immigration crackdown in Minnesota. Images of preschooler Liam Conejo Ramos in a bunny hat and Spider-Man backpack being surrounded by federal agents in a Minneapolis suburb on Jan. 20 added to the outcry about the immigration actions of President Donald Trump’s administration. The government says the father and son, originally from Ecuador, entered the U.S. in 2024. They were taken to a detention facility in Dilley, Texas. The judge previously ruled that they could not be removed from the U.S. for now.

🕯️ On This Day in LGBTQ+ History: January 11 ⚠️ January 11, 2017: Immigration and asylum protections for LGBTQ+ people face growing uncertainty in the United States By this day in 2017, LGBTQ+ immigrant advocates were raising serious concerns about the future of asylum protections for people fleeing anti LGBTQ+ violence and persecution. In the days surrounding January 11, signals from incoming federal leadership indicated that immigration enforcement would be sharply expanded, with less regard for humanitarian protections. This period marked a step backward because: 🕯️LGBTQ+ asylum seekers faced increased risk of detention and deportation 🕯️Survivors of anti LGBTQ+ violence abroad feared being returned to life threatening conditions 🕯️Protections for transgender detainees in immigration custody were placed in jeopardy 🕯️Community organizations reported heightened fear among undocumented LGBTQ+ people Groups including Immigration Equality, Human Rights Campaign, and Lambda Legal warned that aggressive enforcement policies would disproportionately harm LGBTQ+ migrants, many of whom had fled criminalization, family violence, or state sponsored persecution in their home countries. January 11 stands as a context moment when LGBTQ+ Americans recognized that progress on immigration and refugee protections could be reversed without legislative action. For many, safety depended not only on equality within U.S. borders, but on whether the United States would continue to offer refuge to those facing violence because of who they are. This period foreshadowed years of restrictive asylum policies that placed LGBTQ+ lives at risk and strained the capacity of community based support systems. #LGBTQHistory, #ImmigrationJustice, #OnThisDay
