Having recently read it aloud at a charity event, I have finally just published to my website my 2012 essay "Lie to Me", written at the time for my friend Juli, inviting honesty, which it suggests is more about trust, immediacy and fearlessness than it is about truth. I figured somehow that Valentine's week was a good time to get it out into the world.

There is an accompanying audio reading by me. It is about 5 minutes long.

Lie to Me by Kent M Pitman

A 2012 essay, inviting honesty, which it suggests is more about immediacy and fearlessness than it is about truth.

Forgetting was my only option

What might have been is an abstraction
Remaining a perpetual possibility
Only in a world of speculation.
What might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present.

T.S. Eliot – Burnt Norton

Quick now, here, now, always—
Ridiculous the waste sad time
Stretching before and after.

This one speaks to me so much. 🤕

A quotation from La Rochefoucauld

Our minds are better employed in bearing the misfortunes that do befall us than in foreseeing those that may.

[Il vaut mieux employer notre esprit à supporter les infortunes qui nous arrivent qu’à prévoir celles qui nous peuvent arriver.]

François VI, duc de La Rochefoucauld (1613-1680) French epigrammatist, memoirist, noble
Réflexions ou sentences et maximes morales [Reflections; or Sentences and Moral Maxims], ¶174 (1665-1678) [tr. Tancock (1959)]

#Immediacy is the dominant style of our period of #TooLateCapitalism, according to a recent book by @annakornbluh.bsky.social. I believe it’s really making itself felt in #documentary #films, with potentially destructive effects for the #genre.

When I visited the massive ancient Angel Oak tree on John's Island, SC I was all in - the smell of it, spongey ground from the roots and earth underfoot, dipping swooping branches, strong rough bark, and scads of people who wanted me to figure out their greasy phone and take their picture then got ragey hostile when I said "No thanks, I'm just here to dig on the tree" wander on "Hey lady take my picture" sigh #Immediacy #JustSayNo

A quotation from Wilder, Thornton:

«
A dramatist is one who believes that the pure event, an action involving human beings, is more arresting than any comment that can be made upon it. On the stage it is always now; the personages are standing on that razor edge, between the past and the future, which is the essential character of con…
