Yesterday was my birthday. Today I'm celebrating with some friends. It's nice weather and I grilled pork steaks for everyone. But I'm glad I get to spend not only birthdays and holidays, but every moment of each day with my best friend of all.

My birthday is coming up. At times like that, I think about the choices I've made and the opportunities I've had and wonder: did I do the right thing?
I know, I know. There often is no right thing, just the best thing do to at the time with the information you have. I know hindsight is 20/20 and all that.
In 1996, my roommate called me from work. She was working a telemarketing campaign and they were finishing up, so the mood there was kind if silly.
I ended up talking to her manager for an hour.
I called back the next night and talked to her for another hour.
I met her that Friday and by Sunday we were crying and saying "I love you".
She was literally scheduled to "ship out" to another town for another campaign. But she didn't really like that job and the place she ran the campaign for had been so impressed, they offered her a job. So she quit her traveling job and took a local one.
A year later, we got married.
I just walked by the bedroom while getting a refill on my water and saw her sleeping and was struck by how much I still love her, how my heart still flutters for her.
She's disabled now and has a short list of medical specialists. When I transitioned, we transitioned together. She's not transgender, but she decided that she loved for who I was, not for what I looked like. She had to change so we changed together.
We've been through so many things together, not all bad and not all good.
Our lives are far from perfect and we have our problems, but she's the best thing that ever happened to me and I still love her more than anything.
Today, every day, I make a choice to get up and keep going and she's the biggest reason. I live, I work, I keep going for her because she deserves it. She's worth it.
There are lots of things about my past that I would change if I could, so many things, while I do not regret them, I do wonder if I made the best decision. Again, hindsight.
But I never doubt that inviting her to come over to my house that Friday night was the right thing, the best thing.
She's amazing and I love her.
