I checked some early photos, all the way to 1910 or so, and indeed the firemen in Constantinople were generally barefoot. It seems not an occupation well suited to bare feet!

The first London underground railway (now affectionately called the tube); the 1870 newspaper article about it is in the description in the first Web link above.

It was narrow-gauge, 2'6", and would have been more cramped than the third picture suggests.

@thissorryspacesuit -- Perhaps Dickens initially saw the reproduction of Millais’ painting in the "Illustrated London News" (1850-05-11) and couldn’t forget that first impression.
