The downside of posting a bit later about a conference is that your hashtag has probably been diluted. #IDW2025 now stands for International Data Week, Invisible Disabilities Week, and Irish Design Week, leaving some people mildly confused. :D

It's Sunday, it's raining, and we got an extra hour to the day, so I finally wrote up some reflections on highlights from the International Data Week #IDW2025 conference. ☕️

Contrary to what my social media posts about #IDW2025 might suggest, I didn't just present at the #RDAPlenary session and go off to pet koalas 🐨. I also learned a lot and joined many thought-provoking discussions. Every two years, International Data Week (IDW) brings together CODATA, World Data System, and Research Data Alliance (RDA). This year, Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) hosted it in Australia for the first time. My main takeaway: the conversation has shifted from recognizing data's value to respecting where it comes from and whom it serves. Historical data practices have harmed communities, and inclusion alone isn't enough. We need to recognize Global South and Indigenous communities as data leaders. There was far too much to capture in one post, but here are a few highlights: Day 1️⃣ I came excited to learn about the CARE principles 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dNUNac69 but got so much more. The opening plenary featured Alfred J.P. Lin on how opening data revitalized Taiwan Indigenous Peoples, Niklas Labba on Sámi data building modern tools for technology and education, and Marcia Langton on the Australian Indigenous Data Commons initiative. Coinciding with International Day for Disaster Reduction, we explored data infrastructures for crisis situations. Valuable resource: UNESCO + CODATA's Data Policies for Times of Crisis 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dcTcV3xD Day 2️⃣ Data-driven science needs to remain rigorous, inclusive, and transparent. During the second plenary, Agnes Kiragga challenged us by asking "Where are African datasets?". Ana Arjona showed how data validity shapes understanding of civil conflicts in Colombia. Juliet A. Gerard illustrated how high-quality data informs policy in times of crisis. Day 3️⃣ The session on Research Data Management (RDM) training led by Amy Nurnberger and Magdalena Szuflita-Żurawska stood out. Antje Manske showed how AI enhances instructional design, and we discussed community-led, culturally respectful training approaches. Day 4️⃣ The final day introduced many valuable resources that strengthen equity through interoperability and discoverability, such as the CODATA RDM Terminology 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dvfT5iw3 and the DataCite Global Access Program 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dvYA3JVy. The closing session with Nokuthula Mchunu, Devika Madalli, Sandra Collins, and Rodrigo Roa brought powerful insights, including reflections on India's One Nation One Subscription policy 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dEP3Nzge and a reminder that language barriers, not technology, often limit AI model training. If I had to summarize: data for good means data with care – care for the people, contexts, and histories behind it. Grateful to have been part of such an important event and to hear from and connect with so many inspiring people. 🧡 #OpenScience #OpenAccess #ResearchDataManagement

One week ago I was presenting at the International Data Week in Brisbane, opening the RDA Plenary on the Global Impact of the Research Data Alliance.

Grateful to share what the year since the Sarah Jones Award for fostering collaboration in Open Science has brought.

One week ago today, I had the honour of speaking at the International Data Week (IDW) in Brisbane, Australia, opening the #RDAPlenary25 Session "Global Impact of the Research Data Alliance (RDA)". It's been almost a year since I received the Sarah Jones Award for fostering collaboration in #OpenScience. The months since have been full – personally and professionally – and I was grateful for the chance to reflect on that journey before such an inspiring audience. Over the past year, I've had the opportunity to give an interview for GÉANT's CONNECT magazine; join Open Research Week #ORW2025 as an invited speaker; take part in a fireside chat with Hilary Hanahoe at the 24th RDA Plenary; and share my views on open science in a Nature Careers column. I also spoke about contributions to the Open Science in Developing Countries: A Collection of Practical Guides paper; the ABRIR project with the University of Arizona (supported by Open Research Community Accelerator (ORCA) and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative); and my work with REPOPSI, where I've curated 32 new psychological instruments this year alone and recently passed the role of repository manager to new colleagues. The slides that seemed to resonate most were about the ongoing student-led protests in Serbia and my still-upcoming PhD defense – the ones I hesitated to share most. Thank you to everyone who recognized that context and vulnerability matter in how we do open science. I hope I've lived up to the spirit of the Award and shown the value of our community. Open science is – and will always be – a collective effort. 👉 The call for nominations for the 2026 Sarah Jones Award (a biannual recognition) is now open: https://lnkd.in/dHVuRMNA 👉 You can also donate to the Award fund, which generously supported my participation at #IDW2025. Here's to another year of connecting, collaborating, and carrying forward Sarah's legacy.

🌏 #IDW2025 – what a week!

Inspiring sessions, great keynotes + lively discussions around “Data for Positive Change: empowering communities and advancing research.”

#IDW ended with a beautiful social evening – a boat ride, a stunning sunset over Brisbane, Eat Street vibes, and even Australian wildlife!

Thanks to the amazing organizers and everyone who made it such a memorable event.

Looking ahead to #RDAPlenary27 in London and #IDW2027 in Cape Town!

"As research work is increasingly driven by data and computation,... there is an urgent need to articulate a principled approach to research data so as to sustain and advance science. This presentation gives a brief overview of the opportunities, challenges, and recommendations from a forthcoming position paper on the role of data in AI for Science, as well as a perspective on redefining FAIR for the AI age."
