So the excellent OS 9 Boot Kit from "that-ben" at Macintosh Repository seems to be working well. It won't give me a localized German installation but maybe I can fix this later somehow.
Reassembly was successful and nothing was broken off or destroyed. I think that's a first.
The iBook is so incredibly quiet now. It's so easy to forget how noisy hard drives were.
Unfortunately using the iBook Restoration Image was a bust. I don't know if it's because the hard drive hasn't been initialized yet but it simply won't boot. Same with the OS 9.2.2 installer image.
I guess that answers why it's partition number 7. There are in fact preceding blocks with drivers and patches. I know absolutely nothing about HFS but it's interesting that the partition map itself shows up as a partition.
