#IBMcompatible wasn't de facto standard for many years because of it's unique components, outstanding #IBMDOS, or impressive performance.

Let's forget that only four decades earlier they've made giant profits with #IBM405 #tabulators in every #Nazi #concentrationcamp, at least for a moment. Then all #antifascists have to #NeverAgain, again and #NeverForget why that corporation is on the #BDS list.

Unfortunately, the irony of #PC5150 parallels with the movie #Charade are only easy to spot for #Hollywood #copyright layers and computer #geeks with a soft spot for #history.

DOCUMENTARY: Why and How IBM ended up creating the PC (and ended up choosing the 8088 CPU)

this is so #true #microsoft and their #msdos are a stain on the #IBMcompatible ecosystem we all need to #switch to #gnu #hurd i also think we need to go back to #realmode instead of this so called #protectedmode because we need to #KeepItReal with our #computers whos with me

I remembered alt + digits was the trick to type stuff not present on the keyboard on PC machines. What I did not realise was that:

* It had to be the keypad (I always used the keypad, just never thought about it).
* This logic was built into the BIOS (again, it makes sense, I just never thought about it).

The history of Alt+number sequences, and why Alt+9731 sometimes gives you a heart and sometimes a snowman - The Old New Thing

Code pages and custom keyboard handling.

The Old New Thing

Well, that should do for a while. πŸ˜…β€‹ I shot a bundle of old EPROMs at fleaBay. Far more than I had expected.

Question to my #RetroPC bubble: Most of them seem to contain the #BIOS of PCs around the #i386 age. Is it worth the effort to preserve the binaries, before erasing and cleaning the EPROMs?
