I promised I would followup with an article on how I got my #iMacG4 to sync with my #iPhone5. Well, I finally got around to it! If you want to know how I used GDB to reverse engineer iTunes to sync with an unsupported iPhone, take a look!

Back in the day, us Mac folks were so hard on USB; We all knew FireWire was better. But now that FireWire is officially dead in macOS26, I just wanted to reflect on how amazing USB has turned out to be.

Admittedly, my #iMacG4 is the 1.25GHz model which had USB 2, but still, I just bought a brand new USB 3 hub and then I plugged into it:

- D-Link Bluetooth Module
- Wireless Keyboard Dongle
- Wireless Mouse Dongle
- USB-C Samsung 1TB SSD
- iPhone 5

And everything works. Thats 20+ years of compatibility!! including with USB-C!! Leopard is happily backing up to this USB-C SSD without issues.

And yes, I know this SSD is wasted here, but I just upgraded my backup solution for my M1 Air, so this drive is just getting handed down the line.

The iMac G4 is one of my favourite old machines! #retrocomputing #retrogaming #imacg4 #retroapple #oldmac #mac #powerpc #powerpcmac

For any "olds" πŸ‘΄ like me, you might be surprised to see what CD's look like in the streaming age. Clearly the important part of these KPOP CD's is not the CD itself πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ€πŸ§‘β€πŸŽ€πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ€

But yeah, the cheapest way to wean myself off of streaming is to buy these used KPOP CD's.

Anyone in Japan want them? I have a lot more than this. I don't need them after I get the music into iTunes on my #iMacG4

Holy shit folks! A big breakthrough tonight! I got my iPhone 5 to sync with my #iMacG4!!

This was never allowed by Apple as Mac OS X 10.6.8 is the official minimum OS required by iPhone 5. But I knew this limitation was artificial as my iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 are both running iOS 6.1.3... so what could the actual difference be???

This is my first reverse engineering project and it ended up being only a 1 character change, but it took many many many hours in GDB to figure out which character. I promise I will write a blog post.

But in the mean time, please enjoy the screenshots while I buy myself a 64GB iPhone 5 so I can get some content synced!

How to Develop Original iPhone Apps in 2025

"iOS Developers out there, have you ever been interested in stepping back from the new hotness for a moment to revisit your roots and try developing apps for the original iPhone? This article will walk you through the whole process. A lot of things have changed since 2008, but its still possible in 2025."

I originally wrote this article as a followup on my article on how to get iPhone development working on PowerPC Macs like my #iMacG4. But as I was writing it I realized, it had nothing to do with the host Mac and was all about the Original iPhone. So I changed the title and the focus a bit, and I think it came out really well. Enjoy!

Ok Folks, I finally finished my tutorial on getting iPhone Development working on #iMacG4 and other PowerPC Macs! Yes I still need to make a separate page for running on device, but this will at least get you started if you are looking to do retro iPhone development!

Please let me know if you find any broken links or have any questions... or you know, if anyone is interested in seeing more about this stuff at all πŸ™ƒ
