Splashy headaline: Nearly 7 in 10 COVID survivors tested didn't know they had a dulled sense of smell.
Study actually says:
66.0% of infected participants without self-reported change or loss also had abnormal UPSIT scores (as did 60.0% without prior infection and no self-reported change or loss),
which looks like "around 2/3 of everybody has dulled smell and doesn't know it* but
a mean of 1.8 years after index date
So maybe "without prior infection" is really quite optimistic and oh look the authors say
The surprisingly high rate of hyposmia among putatively uninfected individuals, for instance, may indicate asymptomatic infection in this group.
So I guess "40-60% of cases are asymptomatic" wasn't something they could be bothered to look up or factor in, not to mention false negatives, denial of symptoms/fail to test, forgetting, etc.
