Splashy headaline: Nearly 7 in 10 COVID survivors tested didn't know they had a dulled sense of smell.

Study actually says:

66.0% of infected participants without self-reported change or loss also had abnormal UPSIT scores (as did 60.0% without prior infection and no self-reported change or loss),

which looks like "around 2/3 of everybody has dulled smell and doesn't know it* but

a mean of 1.8 years after index date

So maybe "without prior infection" is really quite optimistic and oh look the authors say

The surprisingly high rate of hyposmia among putatively uninfected individuals, for instance, may indicate asymptomatic infection in this group.

So I guess "40-60% of cases are asymptomatic" wasn't something they could be bothered to look up or factor in, not to mention false negatives, denial of symptoms/fail to test, forgetting, etc.

While it may go unnoticed, loss of smell may linger for years after COVID-19

People who suspect that their sense of smell has been dulled after a bout of COVID-19 are likely correct, a new study using an objective, 40-odor test shows. Even those who do not notice any olfactory issues may be impaired.

I smelled black pepper today! What a joyful thing to reconnect with!

A respiratory virus in 2016 robbed me of my sense of smell. It was nearly total #anosmia for years, but I'm gradually increasing the frequency with which I experience smell. My version of #hyposmia seems to involve getting one scent back at a time.

Hoping for continued improvement, and that my experience might offer hope to others living with this. #covid did this to a lot of people and it's truly awful!

How to figure out if your clothes are dirty/smelling, if you can't see strains?

(With impaired sense of smell; living alone)
