New study values the benefits of mangroves for reducing property damages in recent hurricanes

This study is the first to value the benefit of mangroves using industry catastrophe-risk models and, overall, found that these trees reduce flood losses for coastal properties built inland of the them.

"[#HurricaneIrma] was the first episode in a long and turbulent process of collapse, one that will expand over time to include market contraction, government disinvestment, and eventually a wholesale retreat toward the mainland."

Florida Great Displacement: climate change forces residents to leave state

Florida is the canary in the coal mine of climate change. Long-time residents are already fleeing, and it's a scary omen for the rest of the US.

Insider

I can honestly say the reason why many of us in #PuertoRico survived #HurricaneIrma and #HurricaneMaria was because of #AMradio. Cellphone signal was scarce throughout PR but those who did have it used it to call the radio stations and inform what was happening.

Heartbreaking stories, sure. But tons of people survived due to early alerts about devastating floods mentioned on the radio. It was an invaluable resource. Yet, on its way out supposedly.

Doing the very normal pre-vacation scouting of where I'd have been if I stayed at the same place during #HurricaneIrma. #StThomas #USVI

Aftermath of #HurricaneIrma in the #usvirginislands #StJohn in 2017. Northshore road rendered broken and impassable, littered with downed trees.

It would take weeks before one lane was cleared and was generally regarded as a "pretty bad day."

The track of Hurricane Irma

YouTube

I remember watching this video when it was first uploaded to YouTube, and to be honest I don't think I'd feel that safe during a Tropical Cyclone near a Theme Park (I live about 40 minutes from a theme park, and during πŸŒ€ Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia [2014-15 Australian Tropical Cyclone Season] it had some debris thrown about, and Marcia was only a Category 1 [Australian TC Scale], or Tropical Storm [Saffir-Simpson] by the time it got here) let alone a Major TC of Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
