Jamaica Beach on Galveston Island getting new sand to reinforce shoreline as part of $5M project

New sand will raise the beach 5 feet in elevation and expand its width to an average of 150 feet from the shoreline. The project is expected to be completed by August.

Houston, Galveston areas getting $26 million in reallocated disaster recovery funds for affordable housing

The Texas General Land Office is awarding more than $45 million in unused federal grant money for a total of 15 affordable housing developments in the south and southeast portions of the state. The funding being newly awarded to Galveston and Harris counties is tied to Hurricanes Dolly and Ike in 2008 or Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

The Texas House Committee on Natural Resources discussed a bill Wednesday that would create a Gulf Coast Protection Account to manage funds dedicated to the Coastal Texas Project, locally known as the “Ike Dike.”

Bill to create funding account for ‘Ike Dike’ project discussed by Texas House committee

The long-envisioned Ike Dike project entails constructing a multifaceted coastal barrier system off the coast of Galveston that would help protect the Houston region and its petrochemical industry from the storm surge associated with a powerful hurricane. Congress authorized the initiative in 2022 but has yet to dedicate any significant funding for it.

Hurricane Beryl’s path over west side of Houston area made it a particularly damaging Category 1 hurricane

Beryl's track over the region was "close to a worst-case scenario," according to Space City Weather editor Eric Berger, who called it one of the Houston area's most significant wind events in several decades along with Hurricane Alicia in 1983 and Hurricane Ike in 2008. A hurricane's most damaging winds are typically northeast of its eye.
