I went to the Hunterian museum in London the other day. It was wonderful. It is a massive collection of surgical specimens from the 18th century. It helped that I went with a doctor. It is just extraordinary. The labels were informative without being overloading. It was just lovely to go to a museum full of really cool stuff.

The roots of a tree on Kirklee Place in Glasgow flowing like slow-moving molasses through the bars of an old iron fence. This reminds me of Lord Kelvin's Pitch Glacier Experiment (one of the longest running scientific experiments in the world), which can be seen in the nearby Hunterian Museum. It demonstrates that seemingly solid materials, like pitch, can actually flow like a liquid, if given enough time.

In April 1804, a meteorite landed at High Possil in Glasgow. This was the first one ever recorded in Scotland, and one of the first to be scientifically verified as coming from space anywhere in the world. As a result, this event, along with a few others around the same time, can be seen as marking the start of interplanetary science and an accurate understanding of the origins of our solar system.

One of the hospital's surgeons, William Macewan, decided to solve this problem by contacting the surrounding Clydeside shipyards and asking them to make artificial limbs for his patients. These are three examples made for them by the pattern shop at Yarrows.

This is a rather moving exhibit in Glasgow University''s Hunterian Museum. When the Erskine Hospital opened in 1916 to care for the many soldiers and sailors injured in the First World War, the sheer number of amputees meant there was a shortage of prosthetic limbs.

Glad I had some time to see the #HunterianMuseum at the #UniversityOfGlasgow this afternoon, as well as its #artgallery and #zoological #museum in neighbouring buildings.

#ThinSectionThursday Beautiful and unusual curved feathery crystals of clinopyroxene, plus straighter, blockier orthopyroxene crystals, in this glassy boninite lava from Trimiklini, Cyprus. These crystals grew extremely quickly during rapid cooling. More info in Alt text. #Geology #Microscopy #Supercooling #HunterianMuseum
