OpenAI had to tell its model to stop mentioning goblins. Funny, but familiar: models get nudged into grooves and keep going, and so do our minds. In Buddhist literature, goblins, hungry ghosts, and demons are the parts of ourselves we'd rather not face. AI can feed those patterns. Outer guardrails help. Inner ones, built through contemplative practice, matter more.

GPT had a goblin problem. Yep, you read that right. The model kept mentioning goblins and other creatures in its responses, even when nobody asked. I felt amused the first time I read OpenAI’s explanation for “where the goblins came from” (OpenAI makes ChatGPT).
