July 1, 1923, Canada welcomed white #immigrants & shunned #POC - mostly #Asian & #Chinese immigrants.

As #Canadians celebrated opportunities #Canada provided - #ChineseImmigrationAct 1923, came into effect.

It applied to Chinese nationals & people of Chinese descent who were British citizens. Predating #draconian #apartheid laws of South Africa by 25 yrs.

100 years ago, the Canadian government passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, slamming the door on Chinese immigration to Canada. A century later, I rose in the Senate to deplore the Act's dark legacy, to celebrate the Chinese Canadians who excelled despite the Act's terrible racism, and to warn us against the dangers of returning to xenophobia and anti-Chinese bigotry.
