Lithium ion batteries on a truck caught fire on the Hume Highway near Yass, forcing the road to close in both directions due to toxic smoke and health risks. A large exclusion zone was set up and nearby residents were advised to stay indoors. No injuries reported, but it is another reminder that transport and safety standards for battery storage and freight really matter.

Lithium battery fire on truck shuts down Hume Highway in NSW due to health risk

Two-trailer carrying 15 tonnes of lithium ion batteries caught alight near Yass on Saturday morning, closing traffic in both directions

I was rather disappointed to see the graffiti. My husband said the men's toilets were poorly maintained and grafittied.

It was disappointing to see this microwave dumped next to the rest area. I didn't get a chance to frame the photo in the way that I would have liked as we needed to leave quickly to be in time for a quick catch-up with friends in Albury.

Next time I will stop at the Ironbark Rest Area which is just a few kilometres further down the road.

We are driving to Canberra for a short trip. We stopped at the Mokoan Rest Stop which is one of my favourite ones on the Hume Highway. It is near the Winton Wetlands in Victoria. They have been working on restoring the wetlands for many years.

This is a mural on the toilet block. Unfortunately the other mural on the water tank has been defaced by grafitti of the tagging kind.

Driving up to Sydney on the #HumeHighway it seemed like there were police every 500m or so around #Goulburn. Let's be careful out there.

Also thanks #Waze for early notice of the above.

This morning we drove from Melbourne to #albury. On the way we stopped at my favourite rest stop Mokoan which is the 1st rest stop after the main Benalla turnoff.

This sign is at the rest stop. The idea is that you should be able to see the Winton Wetlands through the hole in the sign. I could see sky. At any rate, I don't know why they bothered with the hole. All you needed to do is step to the side of the sign and see the wetlands.
