After driving along two thirds of the coastline, we finally found a spot that fits our needs perfectly: Few people, good snorkeling and not as much trash as usual on Sicily. Nevertheless we have to say that Sicily disappointed us. The first impression proved right: it is too densely populated to offer what we are looking for, the coast is not as nice as in many other European regions and the total lack of environmental awareness is stunning. We will leave earlier than planned. A neighbour of mine was an environmental geographer. She did her research on the Aral Sea in the 80s and 90s. Re-directing water, loading it with poisons and basically killing it off was just one of the many Soviet era catastrophes. Funny thing is we compared notes on what the capitalists have done to water around the world, not a lot of difference.

The world smells gross tonight. Burning paper, rancid oil, dumpster, and scent masking scents (cleaning products, plug ins, fabric softener). Not "spring fresh". Like a dirty mop, not rinsed out well, festering in a warm closet.

man, I’m in a foul mood but hopefully can start improving it. Got woken up twice last night by work production alerts, and then a 3rd time at 3:00 AM by my neighbor talking really loud with a friend out on the back deck. wtf. Had to go out and ask them to shut up

(oh and background dread of the future is kicking in at times as well)

Gotta get myself out in nature pronto. Humans suck.
