UN Mappers Mapathon at Politechnika Warszawska ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฑ

On 27 January, UN Mappers held a mapathon with students of Warsaw University of Technology - Faculty of Geodesy, Poland. We mapped roads ๐Ÿ›ฃ in Somalia to support peacekeeping, and buildings ๐Ÿ˜ in flood-affected areas in Mozambique to support humanitarian efforts. ๐Ÿ—บ

Last night at the mapathon we had an unusually clear (drone) imagery to work with and my square had goats!!! This was an anticipatory mapping project in Manakara, Madagascar as it is cyclone season now. Local teams are going out with drones and we were helping with the remote mapping. Anyway, goats!! (I squeeed) #humanitarianmapping #missingmaps
fAIr is a new AI mapping service tailored for humanitarian OSM mappers. We're getting an update on the project (presented at a previous SOTM) by Bright Oluwaferanmi Nejo who is part of HOT fAIr #sotmeu25 #humanitarianmapping https://www.hotosm.org/tech-suite/fair/

SHOWCASING fAIr Ths GIF demonstrates how fast fAIr is for predicting building footprints on aerial images, and how intuitive the interface is. Users can easily control quality by clicking on images that seem inaccurate, ensuring precise results.

There was a question about the questionable quality of satellite imagery available for mapping in Nigeria. We need that humanitarian satellite!! https://www.commonspace.world/ ๐Ÿ˜‚ #sotmeu25 #humanitarianmapping

Common Space is building high-resolution satellites for humanitarian aid, supporting planning, mitigation, response and recovery of disasters, climate, and conflict.

When a disaster hits are you as a community data ready? Paul Knight from British Red Cross is talking about data readiness using examples from the Nigerian Red Cross in different areas of Nigeria. OSM and its tagging scheme is part of the data literacy work of disaster preparedness. (Maps are more fun than databases:) Mapathons are a way to build this literacy as well #sotmeu25 #humanitarianmapping @TheMissingMaps
Another very different case now with damage assessment mapping in Damascus, Syria with MSF to understand where the population is moving back to. There was no consistency in damage tagging in OSM in the data... So tried to get a bit of rationalisation into the tagging. Even the buildings that were damaged people were still living in there! So how to tag that?? @TheMissingMaps #sotmeu25 #humanitarianmapping
Severin is showing their efforts in damage mapping after cyclone Chido in Mayotte. They used the methodology outlined in the wiki https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Building_damage_assessment #sotmeu25 #humanitarianmapping
