Recently we have seen a massive spike of calls to /api/v1/instance/domain_blocks, from all kinds of players, including Google, Microsoft, Chinese IP addresses, a server farm in Cyprus and one belonging to an online casino farm on Malta. Those happen on medic.cafe as well as #Hule, which does not support domain blocks (yet).

I am wondering: what is the value of those (~4k today) spiders? Who would benefit from knowing which instances are blocked by whom? I am aware, that there's a bot run by an "edgy" MAGA/Hatepost/Memefarm instance, but this massive interest across actors makes me wonder.

Ich wünsche mir, dass nächstes Jahr die Durchsättigung von Mastodon im Fediverse auf unter 20% sinkt. Wichtig: ich will nicht, dass es weniger Mastodon gibt. Ich will, dass es mehr gibt, von allem anderen.

Ich wünsche mir, dass Menschen mehr Content ins Fediverse stellen. Blogs. Ganz viele Blogs. Ob mit write.as oder mit AP für WordPress oder (man kann ja träumen) mit Hule, egal. Aber mehr davon.

Ich wünsche mir, dass der ÖRR endlich seine Mediatheken und seine von uns finanzierten Formate statt nur auf YouTube und Instagram/TikTok auch auf von den ÖRR betriebenen PeerTube Instanzen bereitstellt. Die Mediatheken sind schon Bandbreiten- und CPU-Fresser, PeerTube wäre da sogar "gesünder" für den Verbrauch.

Ich wünsche mir, dass es mehr wertvolle Formate aus dem DE und EN YouTube Space in das Fediverse schaffen, weil Werbepartner die Wichtigkeit sehen und sehen, dass wir hier nicht alle Hatefluencer sind, die jegliches Gewinnmotiv ablehnen sondern Ausbeutung.

Ich wünsche mir, dass es mehr Software gibt, die ActivityPub als Primärprotokoll statt als "nettes Wochenendprojekt" unter ferner liefen unterstützt. Ich wünsche mir, dass statt "ja, ist scheiße aber ist nicht US-Silo" wir endlich "ist besser als US-Silo" sagen können.

Ich wünsche mir, dass die Parteien und Gruppierungen, die im Fediverse "aktiv" sind, von Beschallung auf Konversation, Interaktion, und Diskurs wechseln. Und dass Accounts, die das nicht machen, halt im Orkus verschwinden.

Ich wünsche mir, dass Menschen mehr Boosts verwenden und wir von 38:1 auf 1:38 wechseln, damit Menschen der Algorithmus werden. Dass Alternativen zu Hacker News oder Reddit endlich mainstream werden.

Oder Kurz: ich wünsche mir, wie oben erwähnt, ein "ist geiler als Silos" statt ein "ist nicht so gut, aber halt kein Silo".

Aber wünschen kann man sich viel.

Please do me a favor and follow @[email protected] - I am working on dealing with background Inbox/Outbox processes, and those are not as easily debugged in a vacuum of test boxes. Only if we deliver to 500+ subscribers and it still works well on a small machine can I declare a tiny victory here.

The account runs on #Hule, a system I am working on, that aims to become a personal, federated, one-user, fire-and-forget, micropublishing system. Essentially, what the federated Web always wanted to be. At the moment (and probably deep into 1.x) it's a sender, not a receiver. So it's a blog, with likes, boosts, comments, but not a feed reader to subscribe to your friends from. That's coming, and I am super stoked about it, but it's a hard task and will need some deep thinking.

To celebrate video uploading to Hule, here's a video of me eating it bad in Røros, Norway. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I love Norway. Not just because they gave me a license and didn't make me do LIS1... but that one's up there in the "reasons I love" category. We Scandies have to stick together (except for Danes, lær deg å snakke ordentlig, folkens).

The lady in front is the unbeaten champion of night time ER emergencies, the indestructible Dr. Karen. A true hero of medicine. Except when I ass-plant, then she's basically going, "Ah, fuck that guy".

For 1.1α I am experimenting with a wider image display. Moving the tags below the text and the navigational elements (back, forth, map, etc.) to the right, should improve the UX here somewhat. This has been A/B tested by some α users, and generally found more acclaim than rejection.

I've also added the masonry setting for the main timeline (for desktop sizes, mobile automatically uses reverse chronological one column) in 1.1.

Finally: Podcasts are in, with Apple and Spotify support, only Atom/RSS needs some polishing.
