The opening event of the #FrenchWarsOfReligion (1562-1598; ~3 million dead) was on #ThisDayInHistory in 1562. In the #MassacreOfVassy, troops of the Duke of Guise entered a #Huguenot meeting house and butchered 50 of the 500 #Protestant worshippers present before passions cooled.

Legal #tolerance cannot guarantee safety. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1628 the #SiegeOfLaRochelle ended. The breaking of #Huguenot power paved the way for revoking the #EdictOfNantes and returning to active persecution. During an 11-month siege, population fell from 27,000 to 5,000.

Look how close those support columns are to the walls!

When the Puddefjord #bridge was done in 1956, it kept one of its neighbours very close. The Monclair house, for some weird reason also called "the house under the bridge", still stands here, as it has done since around 1760 – no matter how many tall structures pop up around it.

Monclair himself, a watch maker and businessman, came to #Bergen as a #Huguenot refugee and built this house over the banks of the Puddefjord. The house was later a school for housewifes in ownership of the city.

Today it is used as a secondhand store, and its placement under the heavily trafficked bridge makes cleaning its white walls a repeated necessity.
