I have been here for a few months now. Also I’m relatively technical…use Linux, python and work in a technical field. Yet I still don’t really know how to use, or access, features I read others recommend.

I’m mostly use Metatext on my phone for access. What UI do others use?

For those figuring this place out:

Liking a post let's the post author know that it prompted a reaction from you. It made you think. Made you smile. Made you roll on the floor laughing. Made you cry. Gave you hope. Made your day better in some way. Prompted you to imagine a different way of being. Anything, really.
Like posts all the time.

Boost a post to put it in the timeline of the folks who follow you, even though they may not follow the post author. This helps people find more content and gives the post author a wider audience. Boost often.

Also, if you like/agree with a toot so much you ⭐ it, you might as well boost it. Nobody will tell on you.

My process for Boosting and Starring toots on Mastodon

When I scan the feed and come across items of interest I process them using the following criterion:

BOOST: If I want to share the item for others to see or believe is important to engage, I boost the toot.

STAR: If I want to show the tooter my appreciation for a toot but don’t need to share it, I star the toot.

I only BOOST and STAR extremely rarely. When it’s done to me it gums up my notifications. #mastodon #howToMastodon

When someone boosts an interesting post, I want to be able to thank them. I can easily interact with the boosted post, but I can't favorite the boosting action itself. I could send the person who boosted a direct message but I worry it would be out of context. How do you let people know that you appreciate their boosts?

When I boost it feels like it is going into a void. It would be nice to know if my boosting was helpful.

1/ You can search for user name(s) by typing @[type user name] in the post box to make sure it's specifically sent to that user.

2/ MOST IMPORTANTLY, please click on the this icon (between the 'Attachment' & 'CW' icon) and change it to your specific needs (i.e if it's only meant to be seen by that or those users, please select '@' (mentioned users only)).

I wouldn't want anyone to accidentally share any personal conversations out for the public to see.
