When you consider that #AI is a tool for implementing eugenics & take a look at the speed that #siliconvalley and all the #techbros have made #datacenters their white house ballroom (an imperial construction built on the backs of the marginalized) it makes more sense.

Calling Elon or Zuck a "tech bro" is more than a sarcastic reduction of character, it's misinformation!

I'm beginning to think that LLMs aren't a tool.

I'm beginning to think they're a new kind of mood-altering drug, and ought to be regulated and dispensed accordingly.

We're seeing the same patterns - people try them, get hooked, and some proportion of users become dependent on them. They warp users' perception of reality. They give the user hallucinations of new capabilities (not "I can fly!" but the illusion of competence: "I am a genius!" and "I am a programmer now!") Mental illness manifests in different ways.

And just like mood-altering drugs can help the small subset of people who need them and can be trusted to use them safely, I suspect we will find the narrow set of things LLMs can be safely applied to.

But first we need to recognize what category of thing they are.

#HotTake: the #AppleVision / #AppleVisionPro is failing because the market for high-end #VR Headsets is already oversaturated, and virtually all other players have an established library of #apps and uses, and proven compatibility with either #SteamLink / #WiVRn or #Monado and whatever Windows uses for #PCVR. Even with the #iOS compatibility, you just don't have a reason to buy a $1000+ headset just to hold a virtual #iPad / #iPhone when you likely already own a real one, and unlike cheaper headsets it just doesn't offer many experiences that the average user is going to pay that for.

A new headset line would take way more than #Apple seems willing to invest, especially this late in #VirtualReality #technology's cycle.

That said, there's definitely still a market for something cheap and easy, like a "Quest Lite", something that is made to hook to a lower-end #gaming computer's GPU and run stuff like tracking and reprojection locally, but doesn't necessarily have the power for anything substantial.
