Relighting anarchism towards horizontalism - SLRPNK

Relighting [https://slrpnk.net/post/37589245] ## The unwellness of the term anarchism I have been identifying as an anarchist because I was - and still am - opposed to might and the machine. But with time, I have become more and more reluctant about using the term. Particularily after finding the societal structure democratic confederalism (democonf) as envisioned by Abdullah Ɩcalan šŸŒž But now by using the term anarchism for describing demconf, I apply the anarchist aesthetics in a way that I dislike, because when I present democonf as anarchist, peoples mind will naturally go towards how society has painted forth anarchism. Because anarhcism is a heavily painted term. It is clearly rooted in european culture, which means that understanding the term requires insight into western anarchist history; For instance workers struggle, propaganda of the deed, fascism and antifascism. As well as how anarchists has related themselves towards other dragments [https://slrpnk.net/post/36722573] such as feminism, the rainbow dragment and so on. ## The negative aura of the term anarchism Anarchist symoblics are mostly negative. Negative in the sense that it is opposed to something. The black cat and the black flag is symbols of opposition. The symbol ā€œanarchism is orderā€ is a negative response to the source ā€œanarchism is a society without orderā€ and therefore strengthen the source idea through the force of responding [https://slrpnk.net/post/37200555]. Even the name is negative as it comes from ancient greek meaning ā€œwithout rulerā€. To be clear, it’s not to say that we shouldn’t have negative symbols, but rather to be aware of the negative aura of anarchism. This aura is therefore painted upon all that which associates with anarachism. If you are an anarchist that primarily focuses on mutual aid, then you still get this negative aura painted upon you. This is why it is so easy to distance oneself from anarchism. **To associate with anarchism is to cover oneself in a negative aura. ** In contrast, positive symbols makes us ask what do we want? This is much more challenging because it requires us to be specific and risk loosing people, or decide who we want to loose. How does society look without patriarchy? Rainbow dragment. How does society look without war? Peace. How does society look without oil? Zero carz. By finding positive symbols, we draw people in. But let’s make it abundantly clear. Positive symbols doesn’t mean that we move towards lokening. A positive symbol might as well be fascist, liberal, racist or tankie. A positive symbol is simply explicit about how to respond to something unwanted. Some anarchist flags has a more positive spin in that they combine the black flag with symbolic colors/flags of other dragments such as green for environmentalism, pink/purple for feminism, or the the rainbow flag. But this still doesn’t remove the negative aura. ## The umbrella Anarchism makes us focus on the umbrella term rather than specific societal structures. Anarcho primitivism, anarcho communism and anarcho syndicalism gets covered by the negative aura. The apparant strength of this is that it ā€œunitesā€ all anarchists under a banner, but in reality it weakens the specific structures in that they channel their attention upwards towards the mythical anarchism. This is why there are successful dragments we would characterize as anarchist that doesn’t want to associate with it. What we want is for an umbrella term to strengthen us and to enable us to connect with other anarchist societies. We don’t want to channel our attention up towards the umbrella term, but rather downwards. Going away from a negatively and heavily painted umbrella towards a positively and lightly painted umbrella. ## Relighting towards horizontalism For this reason I forward the term horizontalism. This is a positive symbol which sais we strive for horizontal structures. Horizontalism can be represented with a horizontal line. I do not suggest that it should be used, but I do say that it is possible to use as a symbol for horizontalism. Horizontalism channels our attention towards for instance demconf, Zapatistas, horizontal tribes and paris commune.

Turning stress, conflict, and exhaustion into commons culture instead of mutual destruction

"To put some "commons" structure into this kindness… A path before we knee-jerk criticise members of the community we should make real offers to help repeatedly (x3) in a positive community way. Only then let the "negative" monster of judgment lose to clean up the mess. Focus on clean up first, the "common senses" desire to attack second. What do you think about growing our positive norms (common sense)." This is the hard bit of any grassroots movement of turning stress, conflict, and […]

How come everyone isn’t talking about ā€œHope Without Hope,ā€ Matt Broomfield’s 2025 book about #Rojava?

While I don’t agree with each and every one of the positions advanced, to say the least, I am finding his analysis exceptionally bracing and clarifying, grounded in his extensive experience in northeastern Syria. Anyone with a commitment to #anarchism or #horizontalism, especially, should give this a read and be challenged by it.

A political strategy for degrowth

Is the reader of this interested in horizontalism/horizontal organizing and unique forms of self expression, especially those which require research to fully realize? (therianthropes and dronethings as well as transgender folk come to mind)

The reader should come together with me and any others who are interested
to form a council for the Research and Development of Unique Self Expression with consensus-based decision making (a process in which a proposal is only passed when all members of the council feel comfortable to give their consent, and in which a proposal is modified until all concerns are satisfied)
(DM me, or respond to this if interested.)

Drones, therianthropes, queer/trans folk, furries, freaks, bodymodders, biohackers, fleshgrafters and in general all who value self expression highly are welcome.

What is the purpose of such a group?

  • To come together and leverage individual capacities to tackle greater research projects.
  • To research and develop technologies which help self expression.
  • To get together and cooperate/collaborate with like-minded entities.
  • To share ways of self expression and the technologies which facilitate them.
  • In general, to facilitate self expression.

Lastly, my personal motivation for attempting to start this group is my interest in horizontal organizing and my realization that I come up with wacky ideas for self expression purposes all the time. Additionally, to me, the primary purpose of this group is research & development.

Some Base principles
Below I shall suggest some base principles of the group and a rationale for each. The base principles can be modified by consensus decision but I offer the following:

  • No bigotry (transphobia, homophobia, racism, ableism, etc) of any kind.
Rationale: Bigotry stifles self expression by creating fear, additionally almost all who would be interested in this group probably fall into some group where bigotry harms them directly.
  • Do not judge what others do to their bodies.
Rationale: Unlimited bodily autonomy is a prerequisite to unlimited self expression.
  • Share technology openly with members of the group, keep software and hardware open. (This is less an organizing principle, but more a basic virtue of the group)
Rationale: To come together in a group would have no purpose if everyone simply did their own thing and did not let others take part.
  • Never create any structure which de facto forces members to seek approval for their self-expression.
Rationale: To explain this one I have to grant some context:
The way I view facilitation of expression would include distribution of resources, such as donations and related things.
However, how these resources would be distributed could become a structure similar to a research grant, where a project is brought before the group and then approved for funding. This could especially hinder those research projects where only one entity benefits, where funding could be denied by the general group, which then would essentially render a resource intensive task infeasible or impossible. Which could then in turn cause members to follow group trends to seek approval, rather than their own unique self.
I do not want any of this to happen, ever.
This is some extra rambling and discussion, feel free to add onto this: Additionally, this distribution of resources should be by need (I think, I’ve also considered like a slush fund where everyone gets some equal part of the resources no questions asked) and so that all individual needs are satisfied to the greatest extent possible, so those who do not have expendable resources would be preferred over those who do. This idea of distribution could potentially clash with the above point, in the sense that if one group of individuals within (hypothetically, therianthropes) has larger numbers, that satisfying all individual needs could also result in those groups of individuals (hypothetically, drones) which are in lesser number to receive inadequate resources, which then could again result in those lesser-numbered subgroups to need to gain popularity, lest they be restricted in their development.
(Do note that lots of research that could help a drone, could also help a therianthrope, and there will likely be many subjects where the interests of various subgroups overlap.)
I guess this sort of problem might always exist with any scenario where limited resources are distributed in a group, they have to be triaged, and this triage process won’t satisfy all as fully as each member would wish to.
  • Some critiques of horizontality/non-hierarchy are basically: "horizontality/non-hierarchy+ABC bad things or minus XYZ good things = some less than good/effective thing." But that's an issue of the absence of XYZ good things / the presence of ABC bad things-- not horizontality

The same could be said of many critiques of direct democracy (direct collective decision making). Direct democracy+ABC bad things or minus XYZ good things is unsurprisingly not as ethical/effective as Direct democracy + XYZ good things and minus ABC bad things.

It is when there is a gestalt of multiple liberatory processes/practices/goals that various necessary but insufficient features for liberatory organizing can meaningfully thrive and mutually qualify each other.

Points of Unity template for shared processes and practices (for social movement groups and popular organizations of various kinds): ***Although descriptively accurate, the above is not formulated to be the best name for practical use in movement context as it is too jargon heavy and wordy. Alternative names: Points of Unity, Group agreements, Shared Agreements, Group Practices, Shared Practices, Group Processes, Shared Processes, etc

Direct-Democracy: Direct democracy refers to direct collective decision making. Direct democracy enables collective dialogue, decisions, and actions to achieve various goals and solve various problems. Deliberation is foundational to a practical direct democracy as it enables questions, amendments, conversations, problems, solution criteria, multiple perspectives, critiques, concerns, alternative possibilities, dissent, and evaluation of pros and cons to round out proposals and decisions made. After deliberation, there is an aim for full agreement. If there is not full agreement, there is further discussion and then a decision is made by majority vote. ***The specifics of direct democracy can be tweaked and even left out of this section and simply included in the bylaws.

Horizontality: Horizontality refers to the presence of self-organization and the absence of hierarchy. Hierarchy refers to institutionalized top-down command obedience relations. Horizontality includes freedom from hierarchy, freedom from oppression, freedom from domination, freedom from exploitation, and freedom to participate in self-managed groups and relations. This group strives to be internally horizontal and contribute to horizontal relations. etc. ***can alternatively be called or framed as: non-hierarchy, or egalitarian relations, or opposition to hierarchy. With different groups, different framings and wordings will make more sense. Depending on group and context, it may or may not make sense for a group to give a list of various hierarchies in such a points of unity document. For sake of brevity, it can make sense to include the substance of horizontality within other points.

Free Association and Participatory activity: Free association refers to freedom of and from associations as well as participatory activity within associations. For there to be free association and participatory activity, persons and groups must have the guaranteed freedoms to choose their activities and associations while respecting and enabling freedoms of others to do the same. All labor, work, and action within this group is to be voluntary and non-coerced. If someone does not like a policy that is made, they can continue to argue for and advocate an alternative proposal, continue to argue one’s point formally and informally, choose to not participate in the implementation of the policy they disagree with while remaining in the group, or choose to leave the association. *** This point can potentially be included in other points of unity without being its own point. Also, it is often implied that a group is such a voluntary association so including this for a group as an explicit point may or may not make sense.

Direct Action: Direct action refers to opposing exploitation, domination and oppression through self-managed action to meet needs of people. Direct action can be contrasted to indirect action of top-down organizing and relying on rulers to solve social problems. Direct action includes a wide array of potential activities and campaigns against specific hierarchical institutions for short term, mid-term, and long-term goals. *** A description giving examples of direct action tactics such as occupations, expropriations, blockades, strikes, boycotts, etc. is optional. An alternative to the wording to ā€œdomination, exploitation, and oppressionā€ can be ā€œunfreedom and injusticeā€ or something sufficiently similar.

Mutual Aid: Mutual aid refers to voluntary multidirectional help to meet needs. Mutual aid can exist within a group, between groups, between groups and persons, between persons etc. Mutual aid enables groups and people to pool abilities, needs, ideas, proposals, actions, infrastructure, resources, tools, etc. together. Mutual aid can include a wide array of potential activities from mutual assistance towards common goals (including direct action goals), creating or participating in development of the commons (including communal fields, factories and workshops, social centers, libraries, eco-technology projects, etc), free food distribution, communal childcare, etc. ***Such a list or variation thereof is optional to include.

For groups that collaborate with other groups in various formal and informal ways:

Co-Federalism: Co-federalism refers to ways organizations can freely collaborate for inter-collective coordination, decisions, and actions in a way that enables decision making power to be in the hands of people directly. Delegated persons and councils of collectives can meet up for deliberation and administration. Such delegates and co-federal councils are mandated and recallable to their respective popular assemblies, are merely communicative, administrative, and have no policy making power. All policies are made and ratified by general assemblies directly. ***Alternatively the words federalism, confederalism, intercommunalism, inter-collectivity, egalitarian federation, etc. can be used in place of co-federalism. Co-federalism is a neologism, and confederalism and federalism both have connotative issues despite them referring to an essential practice for horizontal and free inter-organizational relations.

Addendum point for Community assembly groups in particular:

Communal Self Management: Communal self-management refers to horizontal, democratic, participatory community politics and economics. Such communal and intercommunal self-management can exist on every scale from the block, to the neighborhood, to the city, and beyond. Means of existence and production needed by communities are to be held and managed in common. Policies and protocols for communal economics are managed by communal assemblies and co-federations thereof. Such communal assemblies and co-federations thereof have embedded participatory councils that self-manage implementation within the bounds of their respective mandates and protocols. Such a communal economy aims towards providing each and all with free access to needs.

***The above point is specifically for community assembly groups. It generally makes the most sense for groups that are at relatively a mature level development to the point where they have sufficient power, means of production, and popular support.

Alternative framing that synthesizes the first three points of unity into a single point:

Participatory Democracy: Participatory democracy refers to a combination of direct collective decision making, without rulers, where people freely participate in decision making and implementation of decisions. ***By condensing the substance of the first three points into a single point, a lot of clutter disappears. From here, people can fill out this point through their own descriptions or through copying, pasting, and blending some of the more essential sentences from the first three points of unity listed as needed. An alternative framing for this point could be ā€œself-managementā€ in such a way that includes the substance of direct democracy, horizontality, and free association. As coherent as the first three points are as separate points rounding each other out, they are rather cumbersome and can be difficult to wrap one’s mind around. Creating a single point that combines the essential features of those points can help clear up confusion. Something like a practical unity of Participatory Democracy as defined above (or alternatively Self-Management), Direct Action, and Mutual aid can lead to a lot of coherence and functional use for groups starting from scratch or otherwise developing such points of unity overtime. Having three points makes a point of unity for processes and practices easier to agree with, comprehend, and communicate to new people.
