I usually don't post stuff about my work, but today I'll make an exception.

Working in a web3 company sometimes brings some fun. Horizen Labs (of which I'm leading the cryptography research team) is currently ongoing the most interesting day ever: the migration of the ZEN chain to the Base ecosystem (Ethereum L2). I am involved in the migration security checks and incident response.

If you don't know what that means, no worries, that's not important, it's the usual crypto fluff. What is cool is that, from the inside, this feels like the launch of some experimental starship from Cape Canaveral, all while being entrenched against a spike of corporate and personal hacking attempts. We are all sleep-deprived, and right now in our internal chat I see a flow of messages like "EON fork height reached", "RPC switched off", "Smart contract deployed and active", "Engines ready to fire", "Target hacker nr. 67 acquired, requesting permission to shoot" (some of these messages might not be accurate, because the process is still ongoing so we have to maintain operational secrecy).

This is a most crucial day for us, and very delicate, so many things can go wrong. But however it goes, I'm impressed, I think it's the first time in my life that I witness from the inside what a well-organized large team can accomplish. Fingers crossed.

I have been thinking for a while about the issue of anonymity in Web3 (and, more in general, anonymous transactions). The growing realization of the damage caused by decentralized financial technologies is nagging my cypherpunk self, who has been at war for a lifetime against invasive tracking, manipulative marketing, and surveillance capitalism. I collected my thoughts here: https://gagliardoni.net/#20250427_privacy_compliance

Spoiler alert: I'm not endorsing backdoors, but I think some middleground solution must be found.
