I explain how to play the honkyoku Michi no ryouiki (‘uncharted territory’), which I composed (by using some core elements) to help with starting to play honkyoku.

I played kuyō kyoku (供養曲) on a 2.7 shakuhachi, a traditional piece (shakuhachi koten honkyoku; 尺八古典本曲). The title translates as ‘memorial service’.

Part 4 of the series on special shakuhachi techniques: the チ–ル (Chi–ru) pattern. It can be confusing initially but is straightforward when you know what to practise.

(Lion Dance from the Azuma Region)

Within the usually quiet shakuhachi koten honkyoku there are also pieces which are from the secular repertoire and are merely played to be enjoyed. This is one of the various ‘Lion Dance’ pieces which are executed on the occasion of the Shinto religious festivals in the Azuma region, to the South of the present-day Tokyo.
