First shop day in a long time. Spent the day in the garage doing actual woodworking and having a blast doing it. Felt like waking up a little piece of my soul after a long winter.

[Commission] Car tuning can holder

I completed this project for my friend, who was tuning his car with some cans. The issue was that the pre-made brackets were not quite up to snuff and were loose. While the design itself is easy, the distance was quite a challenge. Therefore, a 3D cloud scan was used to create the design, and someone verified some distances via text messages. The part itself is made of EN AW-5051 aluminium with a brushed and cold anodized (Birchwood aluminium black in case you are wondering). The part itself is

This weekend's fustration:

I placed my new milling machine on it's table. I can now it out and do a few test cuts. However I forgot that the first owner of the machine (the second owner never used it) was terrible in machine skills and maintance.

So que me wanting to do a test cut and discover that the clutch for the worm-gear lowering mechanism was slipping. Taking the clutch out I discovered someone coated it with way-oil that turned into a sticky but slippery mess. So before i could do a test cut; I had to take the whole stock lowering mechanism appart to clean it and re lube the parts that need oil.

Explanation of how this system works is in the alt text of the photos.

Also if someone knows better tags for this type of post let me know! I am struggling to find the right community for machine shop toots.

In #Australia, female #woolworths #homeshop drivers use a trolley and make one trip. The males ignore the trolley, spend ages inside the truck unpacking tubs and piling bags near the door. They load up like pack mules, struggle to carry the loads, break the paper bags and drop stuff, and usually need multiple trips. Easily take 3x longer than the women. It's a macho disease and it's no wonder delivery schedules slip. Probably all think "more efficient". We men can be such dimwits.
I’m a very emotional person, I had set up a bit of angle iron with an improvised soft jaw to mill it into true but I got a z height wrong and managed enough of a crash to move the vice. Embarrassing. I packed up and went to chill out. Later on I have re-trammed the vice for next time but not done the setup because I’m not leaving two sets of parallels and an end mill hanging out in the air till I can get back to it. #machining #homeshop #maker
I have bought steel. Tomorrow’s project is ON! #machining #homeshop #maker
Got it into 1 micron mode as if I have anything like the rigidity to achieve that. #machining #milling #homeshop
It’s now 99% attached in that when head goes to and down digits change on the dro display. The bracket yet needs to come off and be cleaned and painted as it’s steel. #machining #milling #homeshop
Made a bracket for the mill using the mill. Z dro is now 80% attached. Learnings will be useful for the y axis which will be next. X looks to be the hardest if I even have my x and y the correct way round. #machining #milling #homeshop
