Kitchen science! We seem to be back into fruit-fly season. We usually get 'em under control with an apple-cider vinegar trap. Just a jar covered in plastic with a few holes.

But I thought I'd see if there are more effective liquids to attract them. So I've surrounded the counter-top compost w six choices. Updates pending.

1. Apple cider vinegar
2. Chinese dumpling vinegar
3. White wine
4. Japanese sweet Mirin
5. Balsamic vinegar
6. Maple syrup in white vinegar

small update:

compared to the "official" local radiation measurement by Deutscher Wetterdienst my device showed slightly higher values.

@nocci found out that the conversion rate for the #J315 tube inside the #GeigerCounter housing had to be re-evaluated and fixed.

Now I am using 0.0065 and my values are down to the values the official station is recording.

WOODWORK & COOKERY
MANUAL TRAINING IN SCHOOLS
“In regard to manual training, it is proper to note the growth of the work since the first two manual centres were established in Wellington 17 years ago, with a staff of two,” states the annual report of the chairman of the Education Board, Mr. T. Forsyth, to the Minister of Education. “At that period 400 boys received instruction in #woodwork and #drawing, and 400 girls instruction in #cookery and domestic science. Last year lessons in these subjects were given at thirteen centres by twelve fully-qualified specialist teachers, and, approximately, 4400 scholars from 98 primary and nine secondary classes received instruction. The centres are well equipped, and the reports from the inspector of manual training are very satisfactory. In the near future it is hoped to establish an additional centre in the vicinity of Lyall Bay.…”

If you got one of these for the child in your life this #Christmas, and they're disappointed with the performance of the vinegar and bicarb volcano, my advice is don't shake it.

Whilst the result is impressive, I'm now cleaning up the dining room and trying to get rid of the smell of vinegar 🌋🤦🏻‍♂️
