i'm ewan β developer, writer, occasional poet. i build open-source ATProto tooling,
self-host most of my own infrastructure, and take commissions for things i'm actually
good at.
if any of that is useful or interesting to you, ko-fi.com/ewancroft
is where commissions live:
everything's CC BY-SA 4.0. no NDAs, no nonsense.
tips are also welcome if you've got use out of anything i've made or written.
either way, cheers.
I need to cool my home lab better
I home lab is in my room and it is 31 c right now
Iβm really getting to reflect on the paradoxical nature of #homelabbing, #selfhosting, and #technology in general as I work to build a full-spectrum #cybersecurity stack from basically the ground up. The paradox being that if I could afford to, I would absolutely pay somebody or somebodies to host this crap for me and just use it as a service, but by so doing rob myself of the experience gained by building it myself; however, in struggling to build it for myself, I spend less time learning how to use the tools properly because itβs damned near impossible to get them all working together without some sort of sacrificial ritual.
To clarify, Iβm not above #ritual #sacrifice, but none of the witches in the local coven will teach me the right one. Turns out broomstick jokes fly about as well as actual broomsticks. Ha! #rimshot
Almost there.
The server is basically ready β it just needs a little more tweaking.
One silent fan in the power supply, and everything will finally run as it should.
Patience, small upgrades, and a lot of love for quiet hardware.

The server is ready. A bit of hardware, a bit of chaos, a lot of patience and it finally came to life.

There's something that feels oddly cute about me and my father's NASs >w<
POV: Living with a fren who is a novice homelabberYou are having a hard time connecting to the internet...
Connected but no internet.
(It's me. I am the fren who is the novice homelabber. Very happy my roomie is chill.)
about 2 weeks since i started #homelabbing
changes and improvements since,
- i had initially everything setup on wifi and that was hella unstable, i would get random connections drops. i bought an extension board and connected everything via ethernet to my router's internal switch.
- i had been using my old dell inspiron n4010 as my #NAS but the usb 2.0 was starting to become a painfull bottleneck and i eventually shifted the HDD to my thinkpad with a usb 3.0 port. unsure how i wanna use the dell now, i would probably shift adguard home and other light services over to it.
- have setup #dockge to easily manage docker containers and "stacks" as they call it.
- have setup a few other services including but not limited to, #navidrome, #actualbudget and #karakeep.
I might be on the precipice of starting my #homelabbing endeavor. If anyone has advice or experiences to share for setting up a personal file server and self-hosting websites, all would be appreciated!
