The first sources of the history of the people and regions that have been colonized, exploited, invaded, and stolen are oral and verbal sources. These are the primary sources; oral information passed from person to person explains what information has survived, as colonial records often silence or override them.

A hero of my younger self just passed away. Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie showed us that we need not rely on the perspective of emperors and kings to understand our past.

Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, historian of the downtrodden, dies at 94

He put historians in two categories: the “parachutists” with a sweeping take on events, and the “truffle hunters” such as him who sought telling details.

One major part of my scholarly trajectory -- & a real paradigm shift in how I think about & approach history -- was reading LeRoy Ladurie as part of a class at Smith College 20 years ago. The philosophy of the Annales school on "history from above" & the emphasis on doing long, meticulous dives into any & all extant records focused on a place is, perhaps, the origin of my current focus on biographical data & pushing back against established historiography. #historyfrombelow #scholarlytraining
