Nördlingen, in Bavaria, is a special place for several reasons: 1. It is one of the few towns in Germany with a fully intact medieval wall. The wall was built in 1327 and it completely encircles the historic center. 2. Nördlingen sits within a 16 mile (25 km) wide impact crater, the Nördlinger Ries, formed by a gigantic meteor that slammed into the area 15 million years ago. 3. It is my ancestral home on my father's side. My great-great-grandfather emigrated from Nördlingen to the U.S. in 1850.

Here, the historic St. George's Church tower looms over the marktplatz in the town center. This particular day, the historic center was closed to cars and a street festival was taking place, creating a wonderfully vibrant experience.
