Final photo of Denver's East High School. It's a big building, stretching over 450 feet (135 meters) in length. This photo shows a bit more of the two symmetrical wings, which feature mid-wing octagonal towers that interrupt the long horizontal run of the wings and serve as secondary nodes and vertical accents to the central tower.

The building is also situated within a formal site plan at the foot of East 16th Avenue, with the 162-foot (49-meter) central tower being a visual terminus that can been seen from quite a distance away. The building fronts on City Park Esplanade, a City Beautiful-era landscaped parkway that connects Colfax Avenue to the southwest entrance to City Park, directly north of the school.

This is East High School in Denver, built in 1925. Inspired by Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the building blends Italian Renaissance Revival, Collegiate Gothic, and Beaux-Arts features and influences to project a strong civic identity.

This building is a manifestation of the community's belief at the time in the value and importance of public education.

Oulu Cathedral stands as the city’s most iconic landmark—a Neoclassical masterpiece designed in 1832 by German-born architect Carl Ludvig Engel. Its stone walls, however, tell an older story: they once belonged to the Church of Sofia Magdalena, completed in 1776, before the Great Fire of Oulu (1822) left it in ruins.

Completed in 1845, the cathedral’s bell tower rises to 56.5 meters and continues to dominate the city skyline. Local planning principles reinforce its prominence: buildings in central Oulu are required to remain lower than the cathedral tower. The building is especially noted for its warm yellow façade, which pairs harmoniously with the green copper dome and roof.

In the churchyard, beneath a canopy of cherry trees, stands the tiny red-painted Church of Little Sofia—a scale model of Oulu’s first church, dating back to the 16th century.

A bit of a #TBT moment for this #YellowThu. The Glen Iris Inn at #Letchworth State Park as captured in 2013. Took this with my HTC One X. There’s a brand I haven’t thought of in a while…

Beautiful historic property with even more beautiful views.

One of the things I love about historic urban areas is the juxtaposition of old and new architecture, like this view that caught my eye the other day while walking through downtown Denver. The stark contrasts in color, material, and design, and the different feelings they evoke, are stimulating and rewarding.
