Have all the Hindawi journals acquired by Wiley simply been renamed to "Forward Series" e.g.

Wiley's 'fake science' scandal is just the latest chapter in a broader crisis of trust universities must address

Wiley's Hindawi scandal offers a window into a thriving black market of fake science, corrupted research and bogus authorship. It also illuminates a much broader crisis of trust confronting universities and scientific institutions worldwide.

ABC News

Of possible interest to folk here... The PM programme on #BBC Radio Four has been focussing on the crisis in #academic #research this week. Wednesday's episode focussed on the issue of paper mills (notably #Hindawi & #Wiley) and their impact on the number of retractions which, 10 years ago was small, but today exceeds 13K per annum.

Episode below -- though may only be available within UK. Fast forward to circa 40:00 to hear the discussion: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001xdgd #scholcomm #RetractionWatch

#Hindawi follows a full #OpenAccess publishing model since 2007. They may just look bad in comparison because everyone actually *can* look at their stuff (no log-in required, OAI-PMH, web scraping is possible, there's a freely downloadable JATS-based XML corpus).

So, everyone, brace for the 2024 retraction crisis.

More than 10,000 research papers were retracted in 2023 — a new record

The number of articles being retracted rose sharply this year. Integrity experts say that this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Welcome to my four posts about the use of #AI in academic publishing.
This is part one, also known as the fuck around part.

Here is an early 2023 YouTube video from #Hindawi, advertising "writefull" an ai-based language tool on their platform to help authors rework their manuscripts, thus "creating time to focus on what you are trying to say, instead of how to say it".

Prediction : A wave of #LLM-regurgitated #enshittification is about to hit the #scientific literature, and the less-curated outlets (e.g., preprint servers, #MDPI , #Hindawi , #Frontiers) are the lowlands …
If anyone wants to talk about "predatory publishers," youre looking at em. #Frontiers is nothing, they just play the game set up by the larger publishers. The call is coming from inside the house - #RELX is the one pushing higher article volumes every year. RELX is the one building the research intelligence platforms that set the value of research and researchers. Blaming #MDPI and #Hindawi and others not only misses the dynamics of the market, it plays directly into the big publisher's ad copy where they claim only they can protect Truth.

In 2023,🇬🇧English-language journals included almost 14,000 retraction notes, of which 3/4 of the papers included a

😳Scandal is huge because #Hindawi publishing house alone retracted
🎓📄9,600 papers, of which 8,200 had a Chinese co-author -85%-
Scope of the fraud in journals published in Chinese language is unknown.
China conducts first nationwide review of retractions and research misconduct

Universities must declare all their retractions and launch investigations into misconduct cases; a Nature analysis reveals that since 2021 there have been more than 17,000 retractions with Chinese co-authors.
