Ukraine Case in Milan-Cortina: First the helmet, now the uniform is under scrutiny. “Political design.”

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has banned the Ukrainian team from wearing the ceremony uniform with the country’s map at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Games, deeming the design “too political”: the uniform features a map of Ukraine, including all administered regions such as Donbas and Crimea. Valeriy Sushkevych, president of the Ukrainian Paralympic Committee, explained that the contested uniform, designed by Viktor Anisimov, was intended for ceremonies and not for competition and that it will now be changed. However, according to the IPC, the uniform contains a political message. “Bans include national anthems texts, motivational words, advertising/political messages or slogans linked to national identity. A map of a country falls into this category,” the International Paralympic Committee wrote.

Ukraine will be present at the 2026 Paralympics with the largest delegation ever, 25 athletes and 10 guides. Sushkevych had recently described the International Paralympic Committee’s decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete at the Milan Cortina Games under their own flags, anthems and national colors as “a betrayal.” This decision was already made last autumn by a majority vote of the IPC’s general assembly.

This is the second case involving Ukrainian sport at Milan Cortina 2026, that of skeleton pilot Vladyslav Heraskevych, to whom the International Olympic Committee (IOC) did not allow to compete because he insisted on wearing a helmet depicting not only the faces of Ukrainian athletes and coaches who died in the conflict with Russia. Heraskevych’s helmet was in violation of the Olympic Charter, which prohibits political, religious or propaganda expressions during competitions.

Kateryna Kotsar had a message of her own, which she wrote on her glove: “Freedom for memory.” She had in mind the skeleton racer #Heraskevych and his disqualification, and the people he wanted to remember, the Ukrainian athletes killed, the friends killed.
