Theodora Bosanquet was Henry James' typist for his final decade. He called her his "Remington priestess." She typed the New York Edition revisions, expanding single scenes until her page-numbering reached the middle of the alphabet (8a, 8b, 8c... 8m).

After James died, she held seances where his ghost asked to resume their dictation sessions. She kept typed transcriptions of everything.

The typing continued past death.

Sophia Tolstoy copied War and Peace seven times by hand, by candlelight, after the children were asleep. The typewriter was patented the year after the novel was published.

Typing for Love or Money: The Hidden Women’s Labor behind Modern Literary Masterpieces

Taking dictation, revising manuscripts, typing copies, literary amanuenses often labour for little compensation and even less recognition. Christine Jacobson explores the neglected efforts of women like Theodora Bosanquet, Véra Nabokov, and Valerie Eliot, who — through their work as typists, editors, and champions — had a profound impact on modern literature.

📖 HENRY JAMES

Le Motif dans le tapis
Traduit de l’anglais (E.U.) par Pierre Fontaney
Folio / Gallimard

Oh, I will have to read those James and Conrad pastiches by Max Beerbohm. Thank you for your review (subtle and insightful, as ever). I'll order the book from Topping & Company.

The Arnold Bennett piece will be a special bonus. I spent a large part of my younger life in the Stoke area; memories.
