Head South | Film | NZ On Screen

Head South - Writer and director Jonathan Oglivie came of age in 1970s Ōtautahi Christchurch, and later shot music videos for iconic Flying Nun bands, like Straitjacket Fits. Semi-autobiographical feature Head South is his love letter to Christchurch, its architecture and its fertile music scene. Teenager Angus (Australian Ed Oxenbould) becomes enamoured with post-punk music. Dying to impress guitarist Kirsten (played by singer Benee, aka Stella Bennett), he picks up the bass and attempts his own songs. In this trailer Angus starts his post-punk journey, observed by world-weary dad Gordon (Marton Csokas).

Yay, the film I'm in finally has enough critic reviews to net a score on Rotten Tomatoes – 100% no less, to complement its 7.3 on IMDb! https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/head_south

Mine is a small speaking role which was very stressful but of which I am proud.

The film is set to open the Ōtautahi Christchurch season of the NZ International Film Festival on 15 August. https://www.nziff.co.nz/2024/nziff-2024/news/new-zealand-films-shine-at-2024-whanau-marama/

Head South | Rotten Tomatoes

Angus, alone for a couple of weeks with his world-weary father, is drawn into the underground post-punk music scene. Desperate to fit in with this magnetic but fickle subculture, Angus distances himself from his true friends and lies about his musical abilities to his new 'friends'. Caught out by his own deceit he must become the musician he pretended to be. With the support of his friends, especially the talented Kirsten, Angus navigates self-doubt, derision, harmful behavior and a family tragedy to take the stage for the first time.

'Head South' Review: A Mild-Mannered Punk Nostalgia Trip

Jonathan Ogilvie’s 'Head South' opens this year's Rotterdam festival with a somewhat undercooked nostalgic flashback to 1979 Christchurch.
