More salmon! This time from Natalie Koopman, working on #CapeBreton (#NovaScotia) Atlantic salmon, which have sene steep declines. #Hatcheries have been used for decades, here. Smolt to adult supplementation is where #salmon live in the #river at younger life stages, but are then brought into the hatchery during #smolt. 64 tagged salmon showed that the longer the fish spent in captivity the higher survival in the wild, but those that spent less time (1 year) in captivity moved upstream #FSBI2025

Hatcheries can boost wild salmon numbers but reduce diversity - Alaska Native News

The ability of salmon hatcheries to increase wild salmon abundance may come at the cost of reduced diversity among wild salmon, according to a new University of Alaska Fairbanks–led study. The number of juvenile salmon released into the North Pacific Ocean by hatcheries increased rapidly in the second half of the last century and remains […]

Enhancing Wild Red King Crab Populations Through Hatchery-Rearing Programs - Alaska Native News

Scientists examine effects of release timing and size at release on survival of hatchery-reared red king crab. A new study found that releasing red king crab as early as possible after they are reared in a hatchery may improve young crab survival and save operational costs. Scientists from the Alaska Fisheries Science Center observed that the best time […]

It’s that time of year again……salmon/trout spawning season, at least where I am. This is the eyed up stage where you can see their eyes in the eggs. This was several years back and we don’t do this in the classroom anymore…..I miss it! #nature #Science #fish #hatcheries

A quick #introduction:

Hi! I’m Seth, #academic & #nature person. I'm an associate prof at Oregon State University's Dept #Fisheries, Wildlife, and #Conservation Sciences & director of the Oregon #Hatchery Research Center

My research and scholarship is focused on #salmon conservation and fish #biodiversity using available tools appropriately and in the right context (#habitat #restoration, #hatcheries, etc)

Looking forward to reestablishing and making new connections on here!
