While hiking on the Vortex Trail at Thompson Park, I saw a tree with lovely textured bark and stopped to take some photos of it. As I looked closer, I found this little harvestman (šš¦šŖš°š£š¶šÆš¶š® š·š¦šÆšµš³šŖš¤š°š“š¶š®) and had to pull out the macro lens to get some glamor shots: šø

Check out this outrageous NZ harvestman photographed by Sebastian Doak earlier this month near Charleston on the west coast of the South Island.
It's called Algidia viridata ssp. bicolor (yes, another incredible endemic NZ invertebrate still lacking a catchy common name). I've never seen one, but I want to!
The photos on the observation are CC-BY Sebastian Doak.

Jammoās been on an autumn deep-listen: Harvestmanās meditative drift, TVSFās echoic heartbreak, Llyn y Cwnās hypnotic dub, MARAUDEURās jagged post-punk, and Jon Da Silvaās filthy acid chaos.

Good morning. šøļøš·ļøš»
29 October 2025
Suddenly, the light dimsāthen brightens again. Not a flicker, exactly, more like a slow, deliberate pulse. Something feels off. I get that prickly sensation, like I'm being watched, and the hairs on the back of my neck rise in alarm. I scan the room. Nothing there. Or at least, nothing visible.
Still, the feeling lingers. Then I spot Charlie, curled up in the corner, eyes locked on me, tracking my every move. I exhale. Thatās the thing about dogsātheyāre always watching, always present. And somehow, that makes it okay.
People say dogs can see things we canāt. Spirits, maybe. I donāt buy into ghosts and the supernatural, but I keep an open mind. Hmm⦠are ghosts and spirits the same? Or is it like vampires and zombiesāboth undead, but with different appetites. Vampires suck blood, zombies eat brains. Iām getting off track.
If youāve got a dog, youāve probably seen it: youāre sitting at home, and suddenly your dog is staringāears perked, body alertāat something you canāt see. It sends a shiver up your spine as you ask, āWhat are you looking at?ā And if they growl? Bonus shivers.
Charlie does this all the time. Usually through the kitchen, toward the garage. He hears cars pass the driveway, waiting to see if someoneās arriving. I think. But maybe⦠itās something else. š»
"Many cultures historically associate dogs with spiritual realms, viewing them as protectors or guides for souls.ā ā BrainWiseMind
āGhosts arenāt physical phenomena to be picked up by the senses. So some form of non-sensory perception would be needed to perceive a ghost⦠Dogs and catsāand likely most animalsāare psychic, just like humans.ā - Loyd Auerbach, parapsychologist
āMaybe, instead of seeing something spooky, they are orienting their heads to smells and sounds to help them perceive these stimuli better." - Ellen Furlong, psychology professor at Transylvania University
