Hello Folks
A reminder if you are out and about, driving on rural roads, especially ones that run through wetlands, this is the season female turtles are out to lay eggs. Take care, watch out for turtles on the side of the road or crossing.
I am part of our local #Turtle watch, in #HamOnt. We patrol 4-6 hours a day, in the morning and evening.
This evening we encountered two fatalities on the side of the road. They were both mature females , dinner plate size, so probably 10-15 years old. We took them to our turtle guy. Sadly neither had eggs. I say sadly, because we can harvest eggs and incubate within 48-72 hours of a fatality. Also sadly, females take at least 15 years to mature enough to lay eggs. These two left with no offspring and yet had lived a long time.
Again, slow down, watch out we all live on #TurtleIsland #Turtles #Nature
I leave you with some pretty yellow water irises we saw tonight.
