#Everglades Trip -- Day 2 Turned Cold & Windy

At about 1pm the wind shifted 180° to the NNW and a line of dark clouds approached. It really looked like rain, but they quickly moved over and the temp began to drop. #Wind was gusting above 25kts! I portaged my gear back to the northern end of the island, back in amongst the larger trees. This was mostly to avoid the bugs in the wind shadows.

In the second photo you can see my full rig with an underquilt and diamond shaped rainfly. Got down to the mid-40s for the next few nights. I was comfortable and took down the fly after it was clear there would be no rain. 🙂

Did a quick overnighter during what may be this season's coldest weekend. About -12C which is about 15C colder than where I usually draw the line. Wanted to test myself and my equipment. And we all passed the test. I mean I'm here writing this in a good mood.

Hammock, THICC sleeping pad, underdimensionerad sleeping bag reinforced with a regular blanket and jacket also a liner for the bag I didn't need to use.

I got the Ticket to the Moon 2nd tree kit. It's some straps & pegs for using your bike as a 2nd pole for a #hammock . Lines have a whoopie sling for adjusting and two pegs in line for hold. It seems to be very solid and is simple to set up. I did have to tweak a bit to get the hammock to hang high enough. Next up is to try it with the Brompton and a tarp. The quality is good and well thought out. I'm into hammock camping at the moment so maybe for next bike trip.

And an evening swim has been taken! I just love taking a swim in our brown-ish small forest lakes, something about their smell reminds me of childhood summers.

Now I refuse to put my shoes back on for more of that summer feeling. That it currently pours is part of the experience

Went to check the waters of Saimaa (the biggest lake in Finland) in the eastern part of Finland and while I was supposed to send at least 2 nights (was prepared for 4), I had to cut the trip short because of the extensive heat. I under estimated how brutal it was (between +26 and +28 °C) and how it drained all the energy I had gathered for the trip in just 24 hours.

However, I did spent the night at the Huuhanranta beach, which is one of the longest beaches in Finland (1.5km long). Set the hammock right on the beach and while nice, the water is so shallow for such a long distance, that it's not easy to swim in (perfect for floating around in and for kids to play in), so not really my cup of tea.

The next morning I packaged up in the early morning sun and drove to a nice rest area on the way to the Mikkeli (a nice city, especially in the summer time) and had breakfast with a lovely lake view.

The road had multiple nice spots to stop, rest and admire the views of the Saimaa lake.

Good trip, even if it didn't go as planned.
