Edie is determined to go straight for their family's sake, for their pregnant sister, for their niece with cancer and their nephew. But they are blacklisted, unable to find paid work on the space station they live on.

Which means they do go back to Angel when she turns up with another job. Angel wants to extract tech and money from Joyce Atlas, a trillionaire who all but controls their station, using the poor and developing technology to control them.

So, "Hammajang Luck" by Makana Yamamoto. Promises a queeenorm sci-fi heist, and delivers - with a heavy emphasis on the queer characters and heist story, the science fictional setting taking a bit of a back seat. Not quite set dressing, but also not a fully developed world.

We're closely following Edie, who's been in prison for eight years after a job with their friend Angel went south and she sold them out.

There's Hawaiian culture, food, and pidgin, which is a lovely part of the worldbuilding. The heist is suitably action-packed; Atlas is a bit of a cardboard villain, but sometimes it's neat to see those defeated.

I'd have wished to see the space station explored more: at times, the story felt like it could e set on Earth or be "The Expanse" fanfic (though the pidgin is far better than Belter creole ever was). But it was a very enjoyable read nevertheless.

For this heist, she's assembled a crew, and Edie is a runner who knows their way through the service tunnels if the space station. The job gets more personal as they learn more about Atlas's goals, and the crew grows closer as friends.

We have great characters here: Edie themself, a criminal who feels very guilty about not being able to care for their family, Cy, a trans human in more than one sense of the world, an older queer couple, and more.

“No,” Angel said, her voice dripping with disdain. “You’re a disgusting little worm playing at greatness, throwing money around as if it’s a substitute for wit or power. You have no power over me, and you don’t deserve my respect.”

Well, might be a bad time for it, but GO YOU, ANGEL 🥇🏆

“You can’t send in anyone else?” I asked. The group of us were crowded around the open doors of the van, Angel surveying us from the raised interior. She met my gaze. “Would you like to flirt with a man?” The group muttered a collective no."

😂 I get it folks, I really get it. There are very nice men, it's not that, but cishet flirting? NOPE

"My climbing drove Mom crazy when I was a kid. Dad too, but like he always did, he turned it into something worth doing. Told me that if I became a station mechanic, I could climb through the catacombs all I wanted. He figured I was climbing shit anyway, might as well make it a vocation."

This reminds me so much of K1, who's thinking about possible careers in terms of how much climbing is involved in them 💙
